What have contemporary sheikhs done to address the big issues currently confronting the ummah?
1 Answer
Greatness needs to be defined and properly understood. The greatness of a scholar lies in his ability to address the challenges of the time, not in peddling anachronistic information disguised as "Ilm" (knowledge). For example, Ibn Taymiyyah is considered great because he countered the issues plaguing the ummah then: the fitnah of Tatars, Rafidhis, heretical Sufis, Greek philosophy, fanatical taqleed, etc. Shafi'i, Ghazali and Shah Waliullah are great for similar reasons. Those who regurgitate old information today cannot be considered great in the real sense.
