Why is the idea of banning, out of religious respect, insulting images of Muhammed so offensive to Westerners?

I think the answer lies in the dogmatic and historical view that has formed namely the "freedom to insult religion" is a right. Religion was highly critical of the capitalist "takeover" of Europe following the feudal system and their malpractices around the world.
To silence them and their critique, their powers were stripped down and satire, insult and critique permitted to belittle their core driver - their beliefs.
