Iblis, also known as Shaytan (Satan), is one of the most discussed figures in Islamic teachings. He is known for his arrogance, disobedience, and enmity toward mankind. Some people wonder: since Iblis has lived for so long, witnessed the history of humanity, and understands many things, could he be the most knowledgeable of creation?
Let’s explore this idea from an Islamic perspective.
Iblis was created from smokeless fire and was once among the ranks of the angels due to his worship and obedience—until he disobeyed Allah by refusing to bow to Adam (peace be upon him). As mentioned in the Qur'an:
“He said, ‘I am better than him. You created me from fire and created him from clay.’”
— Surah Al-A'raf (7:12)
Iblis indeed possesses experience and awareness, having lived through centuries and observed the behavior of humans. He knows human weaknesses and uses them to mislead people. But this is not the same as true knowledge or wisdom.
In Islam, true knowledge is that which brings one closer to Allah, and is combined with humility, sincerity, and good action. The Qur'an and Sunnah emphasize that knowledge without action is dangerous. Iblis knows about Allah, Paradise, Hell, and the truth of Islam—yet he chose rebellion.
“He refused and was arrogant and became of the disbelievers.”
— Surah Al-Baqarah (2:34)
So, although Iblis may have information, he lacks guidance, obedience, and righteousness. This makes his knowledge useless in the sight of Allah.
The most knowledgeable of creation are the Prophets, especially the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), who was given divine revelation and wisdom. Their knowledge benefits humanity and is rooted in truth and light.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Whoever Allah wishes good for, He gives him understanding of the religion.”
— Sahih al-Bukhari
No, Iblis is not the most knowledgeable of creation. His knowledge is limited, self-serving, and ultimately destructive. He is not guided, and his knowledge does not benefit him. In contrast, the truly knowledgeable are those who recognize the truth, act upon it, and fear Allah.
